The Suitcase I Thought I Wanted

I thought I knew exactly what suitcase I was going to buy.

I had already decided. I wanted one of those clean, hard-shell suitcases—the kind that looks really sleek and put together. It felt like it matched the version of my life I had in my head. Something simple, structured, and easy.

But that’s not what I ended up choosing.

Instead, I bought a set from London Fog. It wasn’t what I originally planned, but something about it just made more sense. The pieces color coordinated, and the smaller suitcase fit perfectly on top of the larger one. It felt practical in a way I didn’t expect to care about as much.

A couple of weekends ago, I used it for a short trip. And honestly, I was surprised. There was so much more space than I expected. I didn’t have to struggle to fit everything in. I didn’t have to overthink what I was bringing. It just… worked.

That was the moment I realized something. I thought I wanted something that looked a certain way. But what I actually needed was something that fit the way I live. I think that’s where I am right now in general. I have this idea of what my life is supposed to look like—where I’m going, what it should feel like, how everything should come together. But when it comes down to it, I’m still figuring it out.

Some things won’t look the way I imagined. Some choices won’t match the version I had in my head. But that doesn’t mean they’re wrong.

Maybe this suitcase isn’t the one I originally planned to buy. But it’s the one I’ll actually use. And right now, that feels more important.

思ったいたスーツケースじゃなかった

どのスーツケースを買うか、もう決めたと思っていた。

シンプルで、きれいなハードケースのスーツケースが欲しかった。見た目もよくて、自分の中で思い描いていた生活に合う気がした。

でも、実際に買ったのはそれじゃなかった。

ロンドンフォグのスーツケースのセットを買った。最初に考えていたものとは違ったけど、なんとなくこっちの方がよかった。色も合っていて、小さいスーツケースが大きい方の上にぴったり乗るのも便利だった。

二週間前、週末の旅行で使ってみた。思ったよりたくさん入ったし、荷物を入れるのも簡単だった。特に困ることもなくて、普通に使いやすかった。

そのとき、少し考えた。見た目で選びたいと思っていたけど、実際には自分の生活に合うものの方が大切だと思った。今の自分も、少しそれに似ている気がする。こんな生活がいい、こうなりたい、というイメージはあるけど、まだ全部は決まっていない。

思っていた通りにならないこともある。でも、それが間違いとは限らない。このスーツケースは、最初に欲しかったものじゃない。

でも、これから使っていくものだと思う。今は、それでいいと思う。
